State Key Laboratory for Plant Biology of Diseases and Insect Pests (SKLBPI) and Working Committee of Youth, China Society of Plant Protection (CSPP), jointly organized the 11th National Workshop of Youth Workers on Bacillus in Beijing on December 1-2, 2016. Deputy Director General ZHANG Jie was present at the Workshop. Dr. LU Yanhui, the deputy director of SKLBPI and the director of Working Committee of Youth, delivered a welcome remark. The participants of the Workshop exchanged and discussed deeply based on presentations prepared by 23 young scientists in sessions Action mechanisms of insecticide, protein and its function, Functional genes and Omics and the application.

LU Yanhui briefly introduced SKLBPI and its functions and roles in the development of the science of plant protection and matters to be settled in the country’s significant needs in the control of crop diseases and insect pests. He emphasized that the Working Committee of Youth had important position and influence in leading youth to take part in the innovation of plant protection sci-tech in the country. He hoped that the vast young workers in plant protection could actively take part in the academic exchange, enhance own academic level, be brave to take on heavy responsibilities and grow up and reach their prime while promoting sci-tech innovation of plant protection in China.

The Workshop invited, for every session, two famous experts in the areas of Bacillus research. The invited experts made comments on each presentation from the points of subject selection and experiment design, scientific innovation and problems existed and put forward good suggestions. The young scientists and graduate students enjoyed great benefit of the instructions. It was learnt that the annual workshop on Bacillus for young workers had experienced a decade. The remarkable feature of the Workshop is that graduate students independently implement the whole process of the workshop from organizing the workshop, hosting the sessions, and selecting awards. This is aimed at providing a platform of academic exchange for the youngsters. The youngsters can fully demonstrate their abilities in scientific research, management, communication and problem handling. In the Workshop, theory of innovation was probed, frontier technology was created and talents were growing. It mirrored fully the current situation in Bacillus research in China, demonstrated the graduates’ positivity in research and embodied the responsibility that old generation scientists to youngsters. Such, the Workshop has carried forward the research and application of Bacillus in China.

Twelve presentations were awarded as honorable mentions in the Workshop. The Workshop decided that the 12th National Workshop of Youth Workers on Bacillus would be held in Nanjing. 110 scientists and representatives of graduates, coming from 17 universities and research institutions, were presented at the Workshop.
