Annual Conference 2016 of China Society of Plant Protection (CSPP) and Awarding Ceremony for CSPP Science and Technology Award was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province on 10-12 November. Taking Sci-Tech innovation in plant protection and targeted poverty alleviation in agriculture as the theme, the Annual Conference discussed the focuses of work for CSPP in the next year and presented prizes to the winners of CSPP Science and Technology Award 2016. Academician WU Kongming, honorary president of CSPP and vice president of CAAS, entrusted ZHANG Bujiang，DDG of IPP-CAAS, with a speech. Academician CHEN Jianping, honorary vice president of CSPP and president of Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Prof. CHEN Wanquan, the president of CSPP and director general of the Institute of Bast Fiber Crops of CAAS, Prof. LI Yuejian, the president of Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Secretary ZHANG Bujiang of IPP-CAAS and Mr. WANG Jianqiang, director of Division of Plant Protection and Plant Quarantine, Department of Crop Production, MOA, were present at the Opening Ceremony of the Annual Conference.

WU Kongming emphasized in his speech that CSPP was a bridge and a link between the Government and all the workers in plant protection and an important force in promoting sci-tech innovation in plant protection. CSPP should seriously carry out the decision and arrangement of the Central Committee and the State Council, keep tightly around the focus of agricultural development, strengthen further the academic authority, social credibility and self-development ability and make great effort to create a new situation of the Society’s work. All of the workers in the areas of plant protection should learn deeply and systematically the core of Secretary General XI Jinping’s talk series, deepen the understanding to sci-tech innovation in plant protection, seize the historical opportunity to develop the plant protection undertaking, and push the work of innovation in plant protection in the light of new idea, new concept and new requirement so as to make new contributions to achieving the goal of agriculture modernization.

CHEN Wanquan pointed out that the Annual Conference was the most influential academic activity organized by CSPP and had become a brand activity for academic exchange. CSPP, based on cementing the traditional expertise, expanded new working spaces constantly in the past year, enhanced services to workers in science and technology of plant protection, served the development driven by innovation, the enhancement of people’s scientific quality, and decision made by the Party and the Government, and made remarkable achievement in all aspects, CHEN said. He put forward that CSPP should further unite and lead the workers in science and technology of plant protection, play a dominant role in sci-tech innovation, be energetic and promising in the main battlefield of sci-tech innovation. CSPP should promote actively in poverty relief through sci-tech, improve the pest green control technology against crop diseases and insect pests and enhance the capability of the control technology of farmers in poor areas, contribute to ensure food safety and effective supply of agricultural products and strive to prosper for farmers, he said. CHEN Wanquan asked that CSPP promotes the reform and innovation, raises the capability of work and service and constructs an academic body which is open and pivotal and is a platform.

Experts from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Zhejiang University, East China University of Science and Technology delivered keynote presentations on green agro-chemical, green control, rapid detection, etc. The participants of the Conference attended exchanges and discussions in five sessions. The five sessions were Agricultural insects and the sustainable control technology, Plant diseases and the sustainable control technology, Biological control technology, Farmland seeds and the sustainable technology, Farmland rodents and sustainable control technology.

The 4th meeting of the 11th Council and meeting of the 10th Executive Committee was held during the Annual Conference. The Council and the Executive Committee selected 16 best academic presentations submitted by young scientists.

It was learnt that the Conference was organized by CSPP, hosted by Sichuan Society of Plant Protection. Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Agriculture of Sichuang Province, Sichuan Agricultural University, State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests and IPP co-hosted the Conference. More than 1100 participants from research institutions, universities, technical extension institutions, enterprises of 31 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) attended this Conference.
