Changdao Field Experimental Station for Pest Monitoring and Control

Changdao Field Experimental Station for Pest Monitoring and Control was established in 2002. The Station locates at Beihuangcheng Town, Changdao County, Shangdong Province, facing Dalian City to the north and Penglai to the south across the sea, and is a chokepoint of seasonal migration for important agro-forestry insect pests army worm (Mythimna separata Walker), cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera Hübner), black cutworm (Agrotis ypsilon Rottemberg), etc. The main research area is migration entomology, which utilizes technology of insect radar, geographic information system (GIS), forecasting models for atmospheric circulation, etc., to study systematically the insect migrations between North China and Northeast China. So far, we have clarified the population structure, the fluctuation of populations and the trajectories of the cross sea migration of the insects and established the real time monitoring and forecasting systems. Many research programs have been accomplished in the Station including 973 Program, Science and Technology Support Program, Special Fund for Agro-Scientific Research in the Public Interest, programs from National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. The outcomes of the programs have provided theoretical and technical support to the consolidation of IPM of insect pests and the setting up of the concepts of public plant protection and green plant protection.

Recently, Changdao Station promotes and establishes a comprehensive diversified research platform that integrates basic research and application practices by taking monitoring and forecasting with insect radars as the core. The Station will develop gradually into a demonstration base that combines together industry, study and research.
