State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests
The State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests (SKLBPI) (http://www.sklbpi.labs.gov.cn) was first approved for establishment by the former State Development Planning Commission, SDPC, in December 1988. In January 1992, the Lab was officially put into service opening to domestic and overseas scientists after passing the national appraisal. SKLBPI is run by the Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In the last two decades, SKLBPI has successfully passed four times of appraisals carried out by the former SDPC and the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011, respectively.
Plant diseases and insect pests are serious biological disasters that are threatening the agriculture and forestry production as well as bio-safety and ecological safety. The issue of plant protection, therefore, has become a great challenge facing the world. To meet the needs in agricultural production and the development of science and technology in China, SKLBPI provides an important platform for conducting frontier, innovative and prospective research work to understand the biology, the ecological mechanisms of outbreaks of plant diseases and insect pests, and to develop the corresponding management strategies. Meanwhile, SKLBPI plays important roles in training high-level scientists in plant protection research and for proceeding domestic and international scientific communications. Based on the operation mechanisms of “open, mobile, joint and competition”, SKLBPI is being built as a center for independent innovation, international communication as well as a base for training and gathering the excellent scientists and high-level talents in plant protection sciences, with the aim to provide the services for sustainable development of agriculture and forestry, food safety, and ecological and economical safety, and to play important roles in the related research fields in the world.
