The funeral ceremony of GUO Yuyuan, the famous Chinese agricultural entomologist, formal director general of the Institute of Plant Protection (IPP), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS), and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), was held at Babaoshan Funeral Parlour in Beijing in the morning on 4 June, 2017. Academician GUO Yuyuan died of illness at age of 84 in Beijing at 1:25 am on 29 May, 2017.

After his passing away, State President XI Jinping expressed his condolences to the death of Academician GUO and the solicitude to his family. The leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and the state including ZHANG Dejiang, YU Zhengsheng, LIU Yunshan, LIU Yandong, WANG Yang, ZHAO Leji, DU Qinglin, YANG Jin, WEN Jiabao and WU Guanzheng expressed their condolences and solicitude to his family and sent wreaths. Formal General Secretory of CPC and President HU Jintao and formal Premier of the State Council ZHU Rongji extended their condolences.

Nearly 100 people sent wreaths. They include President ZHOU Ji of CAE, Vice President LIU Xu of CAE, BI Meijia, member of CPC Leading Group of Ministry of Agriculture, MOA, and director general of the Department of Personnel and Labor, President TANG Huajun of CAAS and member of CPC Leading Group of MOA, Secretary CHEN Mengshan of CAAS CPC Leading Group, leaders of CAAS including LI Jinxiang, LI Jieren, WU Kongming, WANG Hanzhong, WAN Jianmin, LIU Daqun and JIA Guangdong, academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and CAE including XIE Lianhui, LI Zhengming, REN Jizhou, FU Tingdong, FANG Zhiyuan, ZHANG Ziyi, FAN Yunliu, TANG Qisheng, SHU Huairui, CHEN Zongmao, CHEN Huanchun, ZHU Yingguo, DENG Xiuxin, CHEN Wenfu, KANG Le, QIAN Xuhong, YU Shuxun, CHEN Jianping, ZHU Youyong, LI Jian, SONG Baoan, ZHANG Hongcheng, LI Tianlai, the family and relatives of GUO Yuyuan, friends, colleagues and students.

More than 120 institutions sent wreaths or condolences. These include the Organization Department of Communist Party of China, General Office of the National Committee of the Political Consultative Conference, Ministry of Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Forestry, China Agricultural University, Chinese Association of Agricultural Science Societies, China Society of Plant Protection, etc.

At nine o’clock in morning, the Eastern Hall of Babaoshan Funeral Parlour was in a solumn atmosphere. A banner written, in black and white, Mourning of Academician GUO Yuyuan was hung in the center of the wall facing the entrance. The deadee of Academician GUO Yuyuan was hung below the banner. He looked as amiable as he used to be. The body of Academician GUO Yuyuan was reposed among flowers. The Eastern Hall was surrounded by flower baskets and wreaths which pinned people’s grief.

Vice Minister ZHANG Taolin of MOA, Vice President LIU Xu of CAE and leaders of CAAS, including TANG Huajun, CHEN Mengshan, WU Kongming, WANG Hanzhong, WAN Jianmin, and JIA Guangdong, CAE academicians FANG Zhiyuan, CHEN Jianping, ZHU Youyong, and SONG Baoan, Inspector LIU Yan from the Department of Science, Technology and Education of MOA and ZHAI Huqu, the former president of CAAS, walked slowly to the body of Academician GUO Yuyuan. They stood in silence and made three bows to the body. They shook hands with the members of the family and relatives. More than 500 people, including the ones who came from different provinces and represented their local agricultural research institutions and universities and places where Academician GUO worked during his lifetime, his family and relatives, friends, colleagues and students, attended the funeral ceremony.
